Directed by Bafta-winning director, Hassan Akkad, MATAR follows the story of an asylum seeker in England who, when confronted with the hostile immigration system in the UK, is forced to live on the fringes of society and rely on his bike to survive.

2024 will be our 10th year making festival movies here at Deadbeat!! 🙌 It's in our DNA!
And though we’ve branched out to Commercials, Documentaries, Music Videos and most recently Feature Films, we still love sticking to our roots and getting muddy filming in a field! 🪩

🏆We are proud to announce that "MATAR" has won not one, but TWO The Lovie Awards this year.
Our WaterBear Network Original short film has been recognised as a Bronze Lovie and People's Lovie Winner in the Marketing, Advertising & PR: Public Service & Activism category. 🌍
MATAR, a powerful docu-fiction film, follows one man's journey navigating the UK's asylum system. Starring Ahmed Malek and BAFTA-nominee Youssef Kerkour, directed by BAFTA-winner Hassan Akkad, MATAR is an authentic, ethically-crafted tale produced by Deadbeat Films and in collaboration with Choose Love.

After a very successful and exciting screening at Chatham House for our film Dance for Change - we want to put a final call out to all the supporters of this project to donate to our crowdfunder
Please support these talented dancers and creatives in reaching their goals.
All the money donated is for buying the dance scene of Dzaleka refugee camp camera equipment so that they can have agency over telling their own stories and continue their incredible work of inspiration • dance as a tool for change .
This equipment is the same equipment we used to make the film and is a full circle for us to close this chapter of the project. We are so excited and grateful for everyone who has helped us this far.

Launch of our "Intro to Film" program in partnership with BAFTA
Some photos from our ‘Intro to Film’ program, which was run last month as a partnership with BAFTA and Deadbeat Impact.
Aspiring filmmakers, who are currently claiming asylum here in the Uk, joined us to learn the basics of production and film a scene with industry leading crew.
In the words of director and course leader Hassan Akkad, “These initiatives demonstrate our commitment to effecting change in the representation and understanding of displacement.”
“We firmly believe that collective efforts are vital in achieving this goal. If you share our vision and would like to contribute to the continuation of the project, please do not hesitate to reach out!’

DEADBEAT IMPACT LAUNCH
Running a film set with Impact in mind doesn’t just mean reusable coffee cups: ☕️
- It means those with lived experience leading the creative narrative.
- It means adequate mental health care for filmmakers telling their own stories.
- It means learning, reflection and transparency. We are all in the process of growing and building a better, more ethical film industry.
